    • Adam Lambert — “Ring of Fire” (Season 8) This was probably the most polarizing performance on Idol, and definitely the most exciting. Love him or hate him, Adam knew how to get people’s attention, sometimes get people downright angry, and make those who were faint of heart and/or feeble of mind squirm in their support hose — all very good things in the world of rock and pop.
    • Blake Lewis — “You Give Love a Bad Name” (Season 6) Even before David Cook, beatboxing boy wonder Blake was the first contestant to do a cover on Idol that really turned a song up on its end and changed it entirely.
    • Fantasia — “Summertime” (Season 3) This was just pure magic. All of America held its breath as Ms. Barrino stunned with this nuanced, sophisticated rendition of the Porgy and Bess classic.
    • David Cook — “Hello” (Season 7) Before Cook came along, Idol was considered a glorified karaoke competition. Sure, many of the singers delivered fabulous vocals, but they rarely did anything new with their songs.

    • Stefano Langone - 'I Need You Now' Season: 10. Episode: Wild Card. Place Finished: 7th. Original Music Artist: Smokie Norful. The Italian Washington native may not have had the most memorable or successful “Idol” run, and will always be synonymous with standing next to Toscano the week she was shockingly eliminated in ninth place.
    • Michael J. Woodard - 'Titanium' Season: 16. Episode: Top 14 (Contestant’s Choice) Place Finished: 5th. Original Music Artist: David Guetta and Sia. I have always had a soft spot for the contestants who stand out from the others with their quirks and eccentric performing methods.
    • Melinda Doolittle - 'There Will Come a Day' Season: 6. Episode: Top 6 (Life Anthems-Idol Gives Back) Place Finished: 3rd. Original Music Artist: Faith Hill. In the fast-paced, week-to-week grind of the competition series, I’m not sure you can find a more consistent contestant during the show’s run than former backup singer Doolittle.
    • Carrie Underwood - 'Alone' Season: 4. Episode: Final 11 (Billboard #1 Hits) Place Finished: 1st (Winner) Original Music Artist: Heart. We can have a vigorous debate about who the best “Idol” winner of all-time is, as there is clearly a Clarkson camp and an Underwood camp in the “Idol”-sphere.

    • CARLY SMITHSON, ''Superstar'' (Season 7) She'd been knocked around for weeks by Simon Cowell, but Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber turned that all around, insisting the Irish songbird switch from what he described as the ''girly'' ballad ''All I Ask of You'' to the raucous, rousing title track from Jesus Christ Superstar. '
    • RUBEN STUDDARD, ''Superstar'' (Season 2) There will always be fans who believe Ruben should have played runner-up to Clay, and certainly the Velvet Teddy Bear's post-victory recordings (''Sorry 2004'' — just sorry) haven't won him any converts.
    • TRENYCE, ''Proud Mary'' (Season 2) ''Sing like it's the last time you'll be on this stage,'' Paula Abdul often told the Idol finalists. And stylish, sultry Trenyce — who pretty much lost all chance of winning the Idol crown when her shoplifting mug shot popped up on The Smoking Gun website midway through season 2 — did exactly that with her final-week performance: a scorching, discofied take on ''Proud Mary.''
    • JASON CASTRO, ''Hallelujah'' (Season 7) Whether you loved or hated season 7's most polarizing contestant, it was hard not to be moved by his gorgeous, heartfelt semifinal cover of Leonard Cohen's ''Hallelujah.''
