Apr 20, 2024 · If you’re talking about a sustained, consistent run of stories, this era of Superman delivered. So many memorable storylines came out during these years, including Exile, Panic in the Sky, the Krypton Man, and of course the Death and Return.
The entire Superman line is pretty great from Byrne’s Man of Steel in 1986 through the Return of Superman in 1993. Excellent characterization and world-building with Marvel-style subplots and a rich supporting cast.
Comic wise Birthright is the best origin story, as well as Lex story. There's also Kryptonite which explores the psychological vulnerabilities of Superman. Grant Morrison who wrote All Star also wrote the first 20 issues of Action Comics, and his run can be collected in omnibus format.
