Also on this site is a chart which lists the starting letters for each month of production, which for 1942 rifles would allow one to tell whether the rifle left factory as semi automatic or fully automatic rifle.
Jan 10, 2024 · In 1942, production shifted to the AVT-40, identical to the SVT-40 but with a trigger group capable of fully automatic fire. Another roughly 500,000 of these were produced by the end of the war, but the focus of small arms issue had changed to Mosins and submachine guns – options that were a lot cheaper to produce.
This caused situation when some AVT-40 rifles were assembled with narrow stocks with two cutouts and at the same time some SVT-40 rifles were assembled with wide stocks with only one cutout on the left side. SVT-40 and AVT-40 production overlapped only for one month – June 1942 (Source: 1. Page 231).
