    Oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are both atmospheric gases that are necessary for life. Each plays a central role in two important biological metabolism pathways. Plants take CO2 and break it down in photosynthesis, producing O2 as a byproduct. Animals breathe O2 and use it for cellular respiration, producing energy and CO2.
