Theology of the Body is the topic of a series of 129 lectures given by Pope John Paul II during his Wednesday audiences in St. Peter's Square and the Paul VI Audience Hall between September 5, 1979 and November 28, 1984. John Paul II calls this unique language of the body “the nuptial meaning of the body.” He says our bodies have a nuptial character in the sense that they have “the capacity of expressing love, that love in which the person becomes a gift and — by means of this gift — fulfills the meaning of his being and existence” (p. 63).
