Jul 4, 2022 · When a pitched ball’s spin efficiency is multiplied by raw spin, we are given the True Spin of the ball. Knowing the True Spin of the ball allows both player and coach the opportunity to understand how much spin is directly impacting the ball’s movement profile.

In order to understand pitching data, you need to have a good understanding of a few basic concepts, including: 1. 1.1. Ball Movement 1.2. Magnus Force 1.3. Different Types of Spin 1.4. Gyro Spin 1.5. Baseball Spin Axis 1.6. True Spin and Spin Efficiency Ball Movement A deviation from a baseball’s trajectory from the time it’s released until it cro...
With all the basics behind us, now let’s go over where ball movement specifically comes from. There are two major components to ball movement, the amount of movement and the direction of movement. Here are the contributors to each: 1. 1.1. Amount of movement (“break”) 1.1.1. Velocity 1.1.1. Amount of True Spin 1.2. Direction of movement 1.2.1. Spin...
A lot of pitching folks talk about the real value in pitching data to be in the spin rate numbers. You often hear so and so has a curveball with a 3,000-rpm spin rate, or a fastball with 2,800 rpm spin rate. I totally disagree. Although it’s all great info, I believe that the most relevant information in the data is in the movement numbers and the ...
Feb 1, 2018 · True Spin (or Useful Spin) only reflects the components of spin that contribute to movement. For example, a fastball may have a total spin rate of 2,200 rpm. However, after a little bit of analysis, we may realize that 500 rpm of that total spin is perpendicular to the direction of travel (#3 above).
True Spin: this is the total transverse spin on the baseball in RPM. Remember, transverse spin is the type of spin that contributes to movement. Spin Efficiency: total percentage of total spin that is true (transverse) spin. In other words, if a baseball has 1000 spin and 999 of it is true spin, then spin efficiency will be 99%.
Jul 4, 2022 · The easiest way to explain gyro degree is as a measurement that tells us how well a pitcher stays behind the baseball at release, measured on a radial scale between 0-90°. 0° marks pure transverse spin, while 90° is pure gyroscopic (bullet/football spiral) spin.

What is the difference between raw spin rate and true spin?
Spin Efficiency (aka True Spin) measures the amount of spin that contributes to a pitch’s movement. Both terms define the same measurement, but are displayed in two different formats. True spin is the raw value, for example: 1500 rpms.
