Jun 11, 2024 · To answer your most pressing wedding gift etiquette questions, we asked an etiquette expert to share everything attendees need to know about wedding gift etiquette and customs.
- Invitations are not invoices. Contrary to what people might tell you about wedding gift etiquette, you are not required to give a gift to every single wedding you are invited to—especially if you’re not attending.
- Give an amount you can afford. No one should extend their credit line in order to give a wedding gift. “Contrary to common belief, how much you spend is based not on the cost of your plate at the reception (because a guest should not know that anyway) but rather on two factors: how close you are to the couple and what you can comfortably afford,” says Farley.
- Wedding registries are mere suggestions. Just because a couple has a wedding registry does not mean you are not allowed to gift them something that is not on it.
- You do not need to bring the gift to the wedding. Many times it doesn’t make sense to bring a gift to the actual wedding, especially if it’s a destination wedding or in a location that requires you to travel.
- Consider your relationship to the couple. Gift giving takes thought and care, says Nikki Sawhney, director and founder of the New England School of Protocol.
- If a couple has a registry, use it. A couple takes the time to pick out exactly what they want from a store to help take the guesswork out of wedding gift confusion for their guests, says Sawhney.
- Spend what you can afford. While a recent Bankrate.com survey found that most guests plan to spend an average of $180 per wedding present, you should always gift what falls comfortably within your budget.
- Budget for other wedding-related events. Are you invited to an engagement party, bridal shower and the wedding? Create a budget and prioritize the gift based on what you think is most important, says Sawhney.
