- Perseverance is searching for signs of ancient life. While the surface of Mars is a frozen desert today, scientists have learned from previous NASA missions that the Red Planet once hosted running water and warmer environments at the surface that could have supported microbial life.
- The rover is landing in a place with a high potential for finding these signs of past microbial life. Terrain that is interesting to scientists can be challenging to land on.
- Perseverance is also collecting important data about Mars’ geology and climate. Context is everything. Mars orbiters have been collecting images and data from Jezero Crater from about 200 miles (322 kilometers) above, but finding signs of ancient life on the surface requires much closer inspection.
- Perseverance is the first leg of a round trip to Mars. The verification of ancient life on Mars carries an enormous burden of proof. Perseverance is the first rover to bring a sample caching system to Mars in order to package promising samples for return to Earth by a future mission.
Jan 5, 2021 · Perseverance Rover’s Entry, Descent and Landing Profile. This illustration shows the events that occur in the final minutes of the nearly seven-month journey that NASA’s Perseverance rover takes to Mars. Hundreds of critical events must execute perfectly and exactly on time for the rover to land on Mars safely on Feb. 18, 2021.

Science. The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover searches for signs of ancient microbial life, to advance NASA's quest to explore the past habitability of Mars. The rover is collecting core samples of Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and soil), for potential pickup by a future mission that would bring them to Earth for detailed study.
Feb 17, 2022 · NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover snapped this selfie on September 10, 2021—the 198th Martian day of the mission. One year ago NASA’s Perseverance rover plunged through the Martian atmosphere ...
- The Perseverance rover draws on the NASA – and scientific – spirit of overcoming challenges. The rover has a tough mission. Not only does it have to land on a treacherous planet, it has to work on its science goals: searching for signs of ancient microbial life, characterizing the planet’s geology and climate, collecting carefully selected rock and sediment samples for future return to Earth, and paving the way for human exploration beyond the Moon.
- Perseverance builds on the lessons of other Mars rovers. NASA’s modest first rover – Sojourner – demonstrated in 1997 that a robot could rove on the Red Planet.
- The rover will be landing in a place with high potential for finding signs of past microbial life. Jezero Crater is 28 miles (45 kilometers) wide and sits on the western edge of Isidis Planitia, a giant basin just north of the Martian equator dug out long ago when a space rock hit the surface.
- Perseverance will also be collecting important data about Mars’ geology and climate. Mars orbiters have been collecting images and other data from Jezero Crater from about 200 miles (322 kilometers) above, but finding signs of ancient life on the surface will require much closer inspection.
Perseverance Is Roving on Mars: This image was taken during the first drive of NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars on March 4, 2021. Perseverance landed on Feb. 18, 2021, and the team spent the weeks since then checking out the rover to prepare for surface operations. This image was taken by the rover’s Navigation Cameras.
