I’ll be honest with you: I have’t always loved, or even liked, Bible study. Back before I knew how to start studying the Bible, I couldn’t tell Numbers from, well, a math textbook. I did my first Bible study online when I was 17, and I distinctly remember the teacher telling us to flip to Acts 2. “Acts in which book?” I thought, confused as everyon...

I heard this great anecdote from a YouTubevideo a few months ago. We often come to the Bible hoping or even expecting to get that amazing, awe-inspiring feeling of connection with God. But that moment is like going out to your favorite restaurant on your birthday — it’s exciting, memorable, and you look forward to it all year. By comparison, most o...

And here’s another thing. If I had a dollar for every time I saw someone else’s Bible, marked-up with notes and bleeding with highlighter, and thought “WOW! I want THAT!”, I could buy myself a fancy commentary set or ten! To be sure, I love how encouraging it is to see other people’s Bible study photos and videos. But inspiration can turn to envyre...

Trace a circle into your journal and write your verse inside it. Now, using a ruler, make different sections around it on the page. The different sections can be whatever you find most useful, but I like using these: 1. Translations— other translations of the same verse where some keywords may be different. 2. Keywords— words that stood out to me a...

    • Make the Goal of Bible Study to Encounter the Person of Jesus Christ. Bible study is not mainly about highlighters, fancy journals, and complicated reading plans.
    • Approach the Scriptures as a Dialogue With God. Turn your Bible Study into a prayer time. Prayer-read the Scriptures. Instead of looking up what other people have written on the internet or in books and commentaries, spend more of your time talking to God about it.
    • Develop an Attitude of Thanksgiving. This might start sounding like a Thanksgiving sermon, but it really is a powerful principle to understanding the Bible.
    • Think About Ways You Can Apply the Word. Aim for obedience, not just head-knowledge and you’ll be surprised how much more insight you receive. I know, obedience is not a popular word to many people, but for someone who wants to follow Jesus, it’s a great thing to do!
    • Read the biblical text. This should probably go without saying, but I would recommend reading the text upwards of 10 times. And reading in such a way as to enter it.
    • Question the biblical text. I take a blank sheet of paper and ask every single question I can think of about the text, even if I know the answers. I ask about the names of people, what they mean, where else they appear in Scripture, who their family is, what their nationality is, and so on.
    • Learn the biblical text. This is where your study tools come in as you try and answer those questions. Everybody might not have access to Bible dictionaries, word studies, encyclopedias or commentaries, but there are some pretty good online tools you can use.
    • Find the 3:00 a.m. statement of the text. I am a huge believer in one point teaching. That is, walking into a lesson, you have one key thing you want to say with your time.
  4. Jul 15, 2023 · Praying before studying the Bible opens your heart and mind, inviting divine wisdom and understanding to shape your interpretation of the Scriptures. Select a Study Plan or Method. Having a study plan or method provides structure and direction to your Bible study.

  5. Dec 27, 2018 · 1. Carefully select a purpose. Followers of Jesus get together for all kinds of reasons: fellowship, prayer, accountability, mutual encouragement, and—of course—Bible study. Before beginning a new gathering of God’s people, carefully select the purpose for which this group will be meeting.
