If you get an Atari, get one with at least 64K, you'll be able to play more games for it. Or better yet, get an Atari 130XE with 128K. It doesn't have the same build quality as the 800XL, but can play a handful of more games. (Plus a number of Homebrews that have came out the last couple of years require 128K).

Commodore 64 has better sound, but Atari has arguably better graphics. Commodore floppy drives are insanely slow. Ease of use is virtually a push but I think Atari is a little easier overall.
