This framework defines the core competencies required for safe, competent and ethical nurse practitioner practice. The core competencies are transferable across diverse practice settings and client populations. As a result, the framework is fundamental to all nurse practitioner practice in Canada.
Nurses are leaders who influence and inspire others to achieve optimal health outcomes for all. Nurses demonstrate leadership in a variety of ways, including advocating for clients, promoting quality practice settings and by building and sharing knowledge.
Your nursing competency statement should highlight your ability to provide clear and concise patient education, document patient care accurately and effectively, and advocate for patients and their families.
The standards for competence apply to all fields of nursing and are set out in four main areas of professional nursing practice. These are: professional values; communication and interpersonal skills; nursing practice and decision making; and. leadership, management and team working.
