May 3, 2016 · Once you have captured an insect, it will have to be killed before it can be preserved. The most effective way to do this is with a killing jar. To create a killing jar, take a jar that has a lid and place small strips of paper or pieces of cotton inside. You can also add Plaster of Paris to the bottom of the jar and allow it to dry for 2 days.
First, charge the jar by adding a capful of ethyl acetate to the plaster cartridge in the bottom. Then put your insect in and quickly close the lid. After a few minutes, the insect should be dead, but you may wait a half hour before removal to be sure. Insects left in the jar for a day or more may become too soggy and wet to use.
Closely related insects (within an order) should be grouped together. More precise identification (family and common names) is needed in advanced divisions. Collect a variety of insects from as many different orders as possible. Do not allow one group of insects to dominate the collection and throw the variety of the specimens out of balance.

To pin the insect, put the pin through the insect slightly to the right side through the middle body segment, or somewhere the specimen will not be damaged. The pin should be inserted so the insect is straight on the pin from every angle. The insect should be high enough on the pin to leave about 10 mm above the insect as a handle.
