When it comes to Bible surveys, here are the tools that will help you get the information you need. Bible Surveys. One of the best tools for helping with a survey study is, go figure, a Bible survey book. These are books that typically go from Genesis to Revelation, providing essential information about each book of the Bible.
- Various Bible Translations and Study Bibles. First and foremost I am a sucker for Study Bibles. When I got saved my first Bible was a Life Application Study Bible.
- Prayer. No joke probably the most important thing on this list. God’s Word is incredible and to fully understand it we need His help. You should always pray before starting a Bible study.
- Bible Dictionary. A good Bible dictionary is so helpful when you start digging deeper and have no clue what something or someone is. It’s kind of like an encyclopedia.
- Strong’s Concordance. A Bible Concordance is hands down the coolest thing (I’m pretty sure I’ll say this again for another Bible tool). It helps you understand the Hebrew and Greek meanings of words.

However, sitting down with a 2,000-page Bible reference work can seem a bit dated when you think about the simplicity and prevalence of digital tools like Google and ebooks.
- Bible Background Commentary. A Bible background commentary covers the cultural background of the Bible verse by verse. Each book of the Bible has its own chapter (listed in the order used in the Bible, not alphabetically).
- Bible Dictionary. Formatted like an encyclopedia with short articles arranged in alphabetical order, a Bible dictionary is good for researching historical background and cultural context.
- Concordance. A concordance is good for finding cross-references, determining where else the author used a particular word, and for looking up the meaning of the original Hebrew or Greek.
- Cross-Referencing Bible. Some Bibles include cross-references in the margins or as footnotes. Be aware that most of these will not be exhaustive, nor will they all be relevant.
