Nov 4, 2023 · Skeletal muscle is an excitable, contractile tissue responsible for maintaining posture and moving the orbits, together with the appendicular and axial skeletons. It attaches to bones and the orbits through tendons.

Skeletal muscles consist of flexible muscle fibers that range from less than half an inch to just over three inches in diameter. These fibers usually span the length of the muscle. The fibers contract (tighten), which allows the muscles to move bones so you can perform lots of different movements.
Each muscle can contain thousands of fibers. Different types of sheaths, or coverings, surround the fibers: 1. Epimysium:The outermost layer of tissue surrounding the entire muscle. 2. Perimysium:The middle layer surrounding bundles of muscle fibers. 3. Endomysium:The innermost layer surrounding individual muscle fibers.
Skeletal muscle fibers are red and white. They look striated, or striped, so they’re often called striated muscles. Cardiac muscles are also striated, but smooth muscles aren’t.
Although skeletal muscles typically make up roughly 35% of your body weight, this can vary from person to person. Men have about 36% more skeletal muscle mass than women. People who are tall or overweight also tend to have higher muscle mass. Muscle mass decreases with age in both men and women.
Oct 30, 2023 · Skeletal muscle is the most common type of muscle tissue found in the body and consists of highly elongated, multinucleate, non branching cells which are arranged in a parallel manner. Skeletal myocytes often measure several centimeters, or tens of centimeters in length, with the number of nuclei contained within being proportional to their length.
Mar 26, 2019 · Skeletal muscle is a specialized contractile tissue found in animals which functions to move an organism’s body. Skeletal muscle is comprised from a series of bundles of muscle fibers, surrounded by protective membranes.
Skeletal muscles contain connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. There are three layers of connective tissue: epimysium, perimysium, and endomysium. Skeletal muscle fibers are organized into groups called fascicles. Blood vessels and nerves enter the connective tissue and branch in the cell.

Skeletal muscle tissue is arranged in bundles surrounded by connective tissue. Under the light microscope, muscle cells appear striated with many nuclei squeezed along the membranes.
