Gandalf is a protagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He is a wizard, one of the Istari order, and the leader of the Company of the Ring. Tolkien took the name "Gandalf" from the Old Norse "Catalogue of Dwarves" in the Völuspá.

Nov 21, 2022 · While Gandalf's original name was Olorin, it's understandable to see Olorin and Gandalf as two separate people. When he was sent to Middle-earth, there was a sense of the wizard being born again, especially since he no longer referred to himself as Olorin.

As a Maia in the Undying Lands of Valinor, Gandalf’s name was Olórin, which comes from the Quenya words “ olor ” or “ olos ” (dream). When Gandalf returned to Valinor at the end of The Lord of the Rings, he reassumed his name Olórin.
