  3. Stanton Territorial Hospital, formerly Stanton Yellowknife Hospital, is a hospital located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. The current 100-bed hospital building opened in 2019, the largest hospital in the territory, and is under the jurisdiction of the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority. [ 1 ]

The Northwest Territories (NWT) entered Confederation in 1870 after Canada acquired Rupert’s Land and the North-Western Territory from the Hudson’s Bay Company. The smaller territory now known as the NWT is what remains after the creation of several other provinces and territories out of the original 1870 lands.

  5. A Time of Change. The 1800s were a time of significant change in the NWT. There was an intense rivalry between the Hudson’s Bay Company and the North-West Company. This rivalry spurred the construction of many trading posts. In 1821 these companies merged and became a monopoly, continuing under the name Hudson’s Bay Company.

  6. Yellowknife, NWT. The first Stanton Territorial Hospital was built in the 1940s. In 1984, the Federal government contributed more than $14.7 million over four years towards the construction of the current hospital building, which opened in 1988. Stanton Territorial Hospital is currently a 100-bed acute care facility employing 507 staff.
