Ezra is chronologically the last historical book in the Hebrew Bible, covering the end of the sixth and the beginning of the fifth centuries B.C.E. It tells the narrative of the return to Zion. 1) Zerubbabel led the first wave of Jewish exiles to return in 536 B.C. (Ezra 1-6) (Big gap of 57 years - Esther's time) In 535 B.C. the construction of the temple began. In Feb 18, 516 B.C. the temple was completed and dedicated. 2) Ezra led the second in 455 B.C. (Ezra 7-10) Ezra left with about 1500 men and their families in mid-March 455 B.C.
The book divides naturally into the ministries of two men: Zerubbabel, chapters 1-6 and Ezra, chapters 7-10. Both of these men led expeditions of Jewish captives back to Jerusalem from Babylon. Zerubbabel was a descendant of David and thus of the kingly line. Ezra descended from Aaron and is therefore a priest.
The Jewish shop-owners had in many cases found legal loopholes to conduct their work on the Day of Rest. Ezra passed decrees closing the loopholes and forbidding work on the Sabbath. Ultimately, Ezra and Nehemiah called a convention and administered what became known as, “The Covenant of Faith” (Nehemiah, Chapter 10).
