Gandalf is a protagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien 's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He is a wizard, one of the Istari order, and the leader of the Company of the Ring. Tolkien took the name "Gandalf" from the Old Norse "Catalogue of Dwarves" (Dvergatal) in the Völuspá.

- Arrival in Middle-earth. During the Third Age, while Sauron's 'dark spirit of malice' was increasing over Middle-earth, the Valar chose the Istari, missionaries from among the Maiar, to go to Middle-earth and help the peoples.
- Early vigilance. Around T.A. 1100, the Istari and the Eldar discovered that some evil entity resided at Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. Dark shapes moved in the forest and evil began to multiply in the woods.
- Quest for Erebor. Gandalf would visit the Shire occasionally and participate in the Midsummer-eve parties of the Old Took where he impressed young Hobbits with his fireworks, and his stories about Dragons, Goblins and princesses.
- Return of the Shadow. Despite the Council's hopes, Sauron was not weakened by this attack. He had foreseen the move that drove him from Mirkwood, and his retreat was but a feint.
Oct 13, 2023 · During the early years of the Third Age, Gandalf was a bit of a wanderer, befriending all folks and traveling around Middle-earth helping those in need. It should also be noted that it was during these early travels that Gandalf received multiple names from the Elves, Dwarves, and Men.
Gandalf befriended Aragorn in 2956 and recieved his help in capturing Gollum. With Gollum's tale, and the records in Minas Tirith, he pieced together the missing history of the One Ring in T.A. 3017. When Gandalf learned of Gollum's visit to Barad-dûr he returned to the Shire and advised Frodo to leave as soon as possible.
In TA 3018, Gandalf came to Frodo Baggins and initiated the Quest of the Ring. In Rivendell, he became a member of the Fellowship of the Ring and led his companions through many different perils and adventures. However, in the Mines of Moria, upon the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, Gandalf faced a Balrog.
Mar 26, 2011 · Gandalf accompanies Bilbo and the Dwarves on their Quest of Erebor and is the first to find out the true nature of Bilbo 's ring. He initiates Frodo 's mission and the Council of Elrond and at first the leader of the FotR. During the fight with the Balrog of Moria he falls into the abyss and is lost.
