is an Atari 2600 game designed by Steve Cartwright and published by Activision in 1982. It took six months to develop the concept and another three months to fine-tune the game. It was released for the Atari 5200 and Atari 8-bit family in 1983, ported by Glyn Anderson. The Atari 2600 version was also included with the Activision Anthology release in 2002.
Megamania is similar to Sega's 1981 arcade title Astro Blaster. Both games have nearly identical patterns of approaching enemies with the player relying on an "energy" meter. Also, the player's ships are remarkably similar in both games.
gameplay resembles that of Astro Blaster, but rather than being the stereotypical aliens or spaceships, the enemies are various objects such as hamburgers, bow ties, and steam irons. Players control a mobile blaster at the bottom of the screen as enemy objects appear overhead. The objective is to shoot them down before the energy bar at the bottom of the screen is depleted, while avoiding incoming enemy fire. Each of the enemies fly in select patterns and as soon as they hit the bottom of the screen, they re-appear at the top until shot by the player. The player's spacecraft depicted in the game is a cross between the U.S.S. Enterprise and a Klingon Battlecruiser from the Star Trek universe.
Once players destroy all enemy objects and make it past the final wave, the game restarts at the first wave at a higher level of difficulty. Enemy attack patterns will then change; for example, the hamburgers pause during a wave, then move across the screen at a faster rate for a few seconds, rather than just scrolling across the screen horizontally without stopping. Other enemies that move downwards from the top of the screen, like the cookies, will dive downwards, and the dice will no longer travel straight down vertically, but at a 45 degree angle. If players make it through all wave cycles a second time, dive-bombing enemies begin traveling even faster towards the bottom of the screen, and will also fire faster.
When the energy bar is depleted, the player will lose a life. Energy can be regained incrementally by destroying enemy objects, and fully replenished after each wave.
If a player exceeds a score of 999,999 the game ends.
