The origins of Memorial University can be traced as far back as 1893 when the Government of Newfoundland established the Council of Higher Education. One of the earliest visions of the council was to see degrees conferred on graduates of a “University of Newfoundland.”

The Faculty of Medicine of Memorial University of Newfoundland was established in 1967, and the first students were admitted in 1969. It admits approximately 80 students into the M.D. program each year and also offers MSc and PhD programs. Memorial maintains a campus in Harlow, England which opened to students in 1969.

Board of Regents approves the construction of two new academic buildings on the Elizabeth Avenue campus in St. John's: an Arts and Education building and a science building (to be constructed at the rear of the present Science Building).
The bill chartered the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) to begin offering full degree programs in the autumn of 1949. The first-year enrolment stood at a modest 307, but by 1961 enrolment was 1,400, and in 2000 the total enrolment was 15,830, the highest in Atlantic Canada.

Memorial received university status in 1949 in one of the first acts of the legislature in the newly created Canadian Province of Newfoundland.
