In fact, during North Carolina's history, several counties were created that later became defunct, renamed, or absorbed into other counties. And the state also created three counties in the 1780s and 1790s that are now part of Tennessee.
Scotland County was created in 1899, out of portions of Richmond County. Laurinburg, chartered in 1877, is the governmental seat for Scotland County. Its namesake is linked to the McLaurin family, a notable Scottish clan that accompanied the early Highland settlers.
