Feb 7, 2006 · The growth of country music in Canada led to the rise of several organizations and events in the 1970s and 1980s. The Canadian Academy of Country Music Entertainment was established in 1975, renamed the Academy of Country Music Entertainment (ACME) in 1976, and the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) in 1986.
Country music has a long history in Canada. The genre evolved out of the diverse musical practices of the Appalachian region of the United States. Appalachian folk music was largely Scottish and Irish, with an important influence also being the African American country blues.
- Country and Western Music. Country and western music roots lie in the British folk tradition, particularly as preserved in the rural mountain areas of the southern United States.
- Folk Roots. The Maritimes, parts of Ontario and BC shared a strong folk tradition similar to that of the Appalachian region, and country music found ready acceptance in Canada.
- Movement to the United States. Canadian artists have been hampered by the sparse population and the regional nature of the country. Until the mid-1950s country artists relied on live radio shows, extensive regional touring in clubs, and barn dances and local television appearances to earn a living.
- Growth of Country and Western Music. Canadian-content regulations for commercial radio in 1970 gave valuable airplay to artists such as Dick Damron, "Stompin' Tom" Connors, Carroll Baker, Gary Buck and the Family Brown.
