History of Medieval & Renaissance Europe: Primary Documents (EuroDocs). Index of Medieval manuscripts allows location of references to specific medieval manuscripts in secondary works.
Most medieval manuscripts have lined pages, like a ruled notebook. To ensure the uniformity of the lines, scribes would prick pages before ruling. A scribe created a series of holes along the edges of the leaves, often using a tool with a sharp point called an awl, but sometimes a knife or compass.
