May 8, 2024 · To form a conditional sentence using “unless,” start with the word “unless” followed by a subject and a verb to create an “unless” clause. For example, “Unless it rains,” or “Unless he studies.”. Combine the “unless” clause with another clause to create a complete sentence.
Conditional clauses can begin with unless. Unless means something similar to ‘if … not’ or ‘except if’. The verb forms in the examples are similar to sentences with if: we use the present simple in the unless -clause and shall, should, will, would, can, could, may or might in the main clause: Unless I phone you, you can assume the train’s on time.
We can use hardly or no sooner to say that two things happened in quick succession (i.e. there was a very short space of time between the two things happening). We say hardly . . . when / before . . . to say that something happened and another thing happened very soon afterwards.
In time clauses with words like when, after and until, we often use present tense forms to talk about the future: I'll come home when I finish work. You must wait here until your father comes. They are coming after they have had dinner.
You can usually fix the error by changing the comma to a period and therefore making the two clauses into two separate sentences, by changing the comma to a semicolon, or by making one clause dependent by inserting a dependent marker word in front of it.
