In the early 1850s, when services in the area were still being conducted in houses and barns, a visitor to the Valley offered to present a set of communion vessels to the first church to be built in Renfrew County.

History of Renfrew Church. In late 1928, several residents of the Renfrew Mill Community in Travelers Rest, felt the leading of God to start a Baptist church. A meeting was called on March 14, 1929 to organize a church. During this meeting, eleven people were received as charter members.

Six years later, Xavier Plaunt acquired land here near the second chute of the Bonnechère River and by 1848 was selling village lots and had provided land for the community's first church. In that year a post office, Renfrew, was opened and in 1851, the settlement contained a sawmill, grist-mill, tannery and foundry.
