Parents may request a referral for an evaluation (also known as an assessment) for special education by writing a letter to a child’s teacher, principal or special education office. If a parent calls to ask for a referral, school staff must help the parent in putting this request in writing.
If the child is found be a "child with a disability," as defined by IDEA, he or she is eligible for special education and related services. Within 30 calendar days after a child is determined eligible, the individualized education program (IEP) team must meet to write an IEP for the child.
