Mary McCarthy’s contribution was acknowledged in later life; she received the National Medal for Literature and the MacDowell Medal in 1984 and was inducted into the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1989. She died on October 25, 1989 of lung cancer at New York Presbyterian Hospital at the age of seventy-seven.
Much later in her life, McCarthy returned to teach one semester a year at Bard College, as the Charles Stevenson Professor of Literature, between 1986 and her death in 1989. For a semester in 1948, Mary taught English at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York.
