The “Battle of Manners Street” was not the only clash between American and New Zealand troops in New Zealand cities. About the same time there were two similar riots in Auckland, and a further clash occurred outside the Mayfair Cabaret, in Cuba Street, Wellington, on 12 May 1945.
World War II spread to the Pacific in December 1941 when Japanese bombers attacked the American Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbour. This brought US forces to New Zealand 6 months later in June 1942 with troops arriving in Auckland and marines in Wellington.

Units were established in Auckland, Whangarei, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. Men who enrolled had to be over the age of 16 but this did not exclude them from being called up for active service. Only ratings were enrolled in the NAPS.
