The company was created by Lyman and Joseph Bloomingdale, who opened a ladies' garment store in the Lower East Side in 1861.

In 1886 came the visionary move uptown to 59th Street and Lexington Avenue. The store expanded steadily and by the 1920's, Bloomingdale's converted an entire city block.
In the subsequent years, Bloomingdale's underwent a series of relocations and expansions. The brothers moved the store from its original location to a larger space on 59th Street and Third Avenue.
The brothers opened a purchasing office in Paris, France and brought several of those items to the United States. Their first store began to carry more and more garments. By the mid-1870’s, Bloomingdale’s’ was turning into one of the nation’s first department stores.
