Jun 18, 2024 · To visit Herculaneum (also called Ercolano), simply hop on the train once you’re finished in Pompeii and get off at Ercolano Scavi. Two to three hours is generally viewed a good amount of time, but note that last entries to the site are at 6pm in summer (April to October) and 3.30 pm in winter (November to March).
- Use public transport to get to Pompeii. Pompeii is in the Campania region of southern Italy, 15 miles south of Naples and 150 miles south of Rome. It’s 16 miles from the lovely resort town of Sorrento and 22 miles from Positano, on the Amalfi coast.
- Don’t take a big bag into the ruins. The level of strictness at Pompeii varies a lot but it’s best to assume that the staff won’t allow you to take large bags or luggage into the ruins.
- Do take a water bottle. There are drinking water taps all the way along the main thoroughfare where you can refill your bottle with safe drinking water for free.
- Don’t worry about food and drink (but do bring snacks) There are cafes, ice cream/drinks stands and souvenir shops outside all three entrances to the site, but there’s also a reasonably priced cafeteria with a good variety of sandwiches, pizza slices, salads and snacks inside the ruins, just behind the Forum.
- Pompeii is Very Disorganized. From the moment you start your tour of Pompeii, it becomes clear that you’re on your own. The area is so big and there are hundreds of numbers labeled on your map, each representing a different historical spot in this ancient city.
- The Audio Guides are Lacking and Repeat Information. The Audio Guides follow along with the numbers on the map of Pompeii. As you get to each number, you can click on that part of the map and listen to the little blurb about where you’re standing.
- It’s Hard to Find Where the Artifacts And Important Sections of Pompeii Actually Are. The artifacts in Pompeii are always moving and new exhibitions are being put in, which made it difficult to know where things were.
- The Focus is on the City of Pompeii, Not the Event of Mt Vesuvius. One of the more disappointing aspects of visiting Pompeii is that most of the visit is focused on what life was like in Pompeii before the volcano erupted.
- Amphitheater. While not as grand as the Colosseum in Rome, Pompeii’s well-preserved amphitheater dates from 70 B.C. It could seat up to 20,000 people and was one of the largest Roman amphitheaters of its time.
- Great Palestra. Right next to the amphitheater, this “great palace” was the gymnasium of the gladiators. It’s a large rectangular open-air courtyard that served as a training ground for gladiators and athletes during ancient Roman times.
- Teatro Grande. Once covered in marble, Teatro Grande was Pompeii’s second largest theater. It had seating for 5,000 people. It was essentially the “Broadway” of Pompeii.
- Teatro Piccolo: Odeon. Teatro Piccolo was the smallest of Pompeii’s three theaters. Dating from the 1st century B.C., it was an intimate venue with only 800 seats.
