  3. Nov 10, 2024 · Below are a few areas to avoid staying at in Athens. Again, it is not that they are completely unsafe, but they have higher crime rates than other neighborhoods in Athens. Especially as a female traveler, I’ve found that some areas of a city may feel safe for locals but don’t feel super comfortable for me as a female traveler.

  4. To the right (north east) of the triangle (east of Omonia) is Exarchia, this is a very grungy student neighborhood, full of street art. Some people love it, you may wish to avoid it. Just south of here (North East of Syntagma Square) is Kolonaki, a very high end rich persons suburb. Athens is a mixed bag at times!
