Smith's map was the most accurate and detailed map of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic coastline produced in Europe until 1673. It was the source for virtually all printed maps of Virginia for more than sixty years and is considered to be one of the most significant maps of colonial America.
Engraved by William Hole, the John Smith map was the most comprehensive charting of the region up to that time. It was first printed in 1612 and later published in Smiths book The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles (1624), which is the version shown here.

They turned in their surveys to Wood or Bő e, who used them to draft the general map, which was completed in 1825. Printed in nine sheets in 1826, Virginia’s first official state map measured 99 by 64 inches, or 44 square feet. A reduced-size map was published in 1827.
