Animania -- Completely changes (and complicates) the way farm animals reproduce; they have to have access to food and water, and I think they need space as well? There are also multiple breeds of each species that give better output in certain ways, e.g. milk cattle and meat cattle.
Animania is compatible with world generation mods such as Biomes o' Plenty; The Trough is automatable and can work with other mods that have Pipes such as Immersive Engineering; Most resources in the game are in OreDictionary and should be compatible with mods like HarvestCraft.

If it's sustinance then maybe some more farming like animania. If you want something abit more obscure, maybe go the stranded route, like a space mod like future pack with a mode like fossils & archeology to repopulate the planet with Dino's.
I'm considering Pams Harvestcraft but am curious about its compatibility, I already have some of the things you can grow like Rice in Actually Additions and Lemons from the Dalek Mod, and Kelp from a backport mod.
