Years lived with disease or disability vs. GDP per capita. Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALYs) from all causes per 100,000 individuals, by age group. DALYs measure the total burden of disease – both from years of life lost due to premature death and years lived with a disability. One DALY equals one lost year of healthy life.

The visualizations here focus on the disease burden resulting from non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The chart shows the relationship between average income — measured by GNI per capita — and the burden of disease, with global data from 2012. The burden of disease is broken down into communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases. The chart shows that communicable diseases in particular are closely correlated to average income levels. The rel...
The chart below shows the relationship between the total burden of disease versus average health expenditure per person, measured in US dollars. At low levels of health expenditure, there is a steep decline in the disease burden as expenditure rises. However, as incomes rise, the magnitude of the decline slows down.

Summary findings. DALYs due to communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS and diarrhoeal diseases have dropped by over 50% since 2000. DALYs from diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease more than doubled between 2000 and 2021. WHO methods and data sources for global burden of disease estimates, 2000-2021.
To approximate an age of equivalence, we set the age-related disease burden rate of global average 65-year-olds in 2017 as the reference and identified the age groups in each country with the closest age-related disease burden rate to the reference. More detail can be found in the appendix.

To compare changes in population ageing across 195 countries between 1990 and 2017, they classified 92 diseases as age related, meaning that the incidence rate of each increased quadratically with age. Next, they summed the disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) from each disease among adults to calculate the age-related disease burden.
