Bray-P 1 and Olsen methods
- The Bray-P 1 and Olsen methods are the most widely used soil-test P methods in the North Central region. Extensive research has shown that the Bray-P1 test is reliable on neutral or acid soils but that it tends to underestimate available P on calcareous soils. The Olsen test is more reliable for calcareous soils.

Historical soil test calibration data in Oregon have been developed in relation to two specific phosphorus extractions methods: the Bray P1 test and the Olsen or sodium bicarbonate test (table 2). The Bray P1 extraction method is used for soils west of the Cascade Mountain Range, and the Olsen sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ) extraction method is ...

Have the soil sample analyzed by a testing lab using appropriate methods and quality control standards. See the appropriate soil testing methods for Oregon in Tables 1 and 2. Compare the test results to calibrated crop responses to determine fertilizer requirements.
When extracting solution is added to soil, there are four basic reactions by which P is removed from the solid phase: 1) dissolving action of acids, 2) anion replacement to enhance desorption, 3) complexing of cations binding P, and 4) hydrolysis of cations binding P.

Soil P extraction methods. Batjes NH, 2010. 1d. Brief history of the P-Olsen method. Introduced by Olsen et al. (1954) ("Estimation of available plant phosphorus in soils by extraction with sodium bicarbonate"). (USDA Circ. 939). Use of NaHCO3 0.5 M (pH 8.5) to extract the P that plants could extract from calcareous, alkaline and neutral soils.

The most commonly used tests are the Mehlich-3 soil test, the Bray-1 and the Olson P tests. These three tests use a very different chemical extraction solution. The Mehlich-3 extraction solution is an unbuffered solution of acetate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium fluoride, nitric acid, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA).
