The exploration of Jupiter has been conducted via close observations by automated spacecraft. It began with the arrival of Pioneer 10 into the Jovian system in 1973, and, as of 2024, has continued with eight further spacecraft missions in the vicinity of Jupiter and two more en route. All but one of these missions were undertaken by the ...
Aug 5, 2016 · Launched five years ago on Aug. 5, 2011, NASA’s Juno mission maneuvered into orbit around Jupiter on July 4, 2016, joining a long tradition of discovery at the gas giant. One of the brightest objects in the night sky, Jupiter has enthralled humans since ancient times. Today, scientists believe that learning more about the planet may be the ...
More recently, this planet has been visited by orbiters, probes, and by spacecraft passing by on their way to other worlds. NASA's Pioneer 10 and 11, and Voyager 1 and 2 were the first to fly by Jupiter in the 1970s. Later, the Galileo spacecraft orbited the gas giant for almost eight years, and dropped a probe into its atmosphere.
Mar 2, 2022 · John Uri. Pioneer 10 began its unprecedented multi-year journey from Earth on March 2, 1972. Managed by NASA’s Ames Research Center (ARC) in California’s Silicon Valley, it was the first spacecraft designed to travel beyond the orbit of Mars. Pioneer 10’s primary goal was to explore the gas giant planet Jupiter, its satellites, and its ...
Dec 4, 2019 · The spacecraft began its observations of Jupiter in early November, and made distant observations of the planet’s four largest moons Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa. About five hours prior to closest approach Pioneer 11 flew over Jupiter’s Great Red Spot at a distance of 338,700 miles and returned the best images until then of that atmospheric feature.
Pioneer 11 was a backup spacecraft launched on April 5, 1973, after Pioneer 10 cleared the asteroid belt. The new mission provided a second close look at Jupiter, the first close-up views of Saturn, and also gave Voyager engineers plotting an epic multi-planet tour of the outer planets a chance to practice the art of interplanetary navigation.

ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) is currently winging its way to Jupiter to explore the planet and its fascinating array of moons. We have explored Jupiter for decades via both passing spacecraft (flybys) and spacecraft positioned in orbit around the planet. Our exploration began in the 1970s with NASA’s Pioneer programme, and ...
