Eric Liddell is most famous as the athlete who refused to run on a Sunday but went on to win the Olympics 400m, inspiring the film Chariots of Fire.
Eric Henry Liddell (/ ˈlɪdəl /; 16 January 1902 – 21 February 1945) was a Scottish sprinter, rugby player and Christian missionary. Born in Qing China to Scottish missionary parents, he attended boarding school near London, spending time when possible with his family in Edinburgh, and afterwards attended the University of Edinburgh.

Eric Henry Liddell was born on 16th January 1902 in Tientsin (Tianjin) North China, second son of the Rev. & Mrs. James Dunlop Liddell who were missionaries with the London Mission Society. He was educated from 1908 to 1920 at Eltham College, Blackheath, a school in England for the sons of missionaries.

Eric first studied at Heriot -Watt before moving onto complete a BSc in Pure Science at Edinburgh University. Athletics and rugby played a large part in Eric’s University life.
