Keatts is the first Wolfpack head coach to defeat Duke, North Carolina, and Wake Forest in his first attempt since Tal Stafford during the 1918–19 season. [12] After being projected to finish 12th in the ACC, [ 13 ] Keatts led what recruits were left from Mark Gottfried Wolfpack to a tied-for-third-place finish in the conference, as well as earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament .
In his first year at NC State, the Wolfpack also finished the year winning eight of 11 games, advanced to the finals of the ACC Tournament, and earned a trip to the postseason in the NIT. Keatts won two CAA Coach of the Year awards and led UNC-W to consecutive NCAA tournaments during his tenure. He was also the first coach to win back-to-back CAA Coach of the Year awards. In 2024, Keats coached NC State to their first ACC Tournament championship since 1987—a span of 37 years.
