Pseudolus: A slave of Hero, Pseudolus is sly, conniving, and willing to do anything for his freedom, leading to a deal with Hero that if the slave can win Philia for his master, his master will, in turn, grant his freedom.

  3. Pseudolus convinces Hysterium to wear a dress and pose as the “deceased” bride (“Lovely,” in a comic reprise). Gloriosus is momentarily heartbroken and then demands a funeral, including a farewell kiss. That’s a step too far for Hysterium, who bolts. A chaotic chase sequence ensues, finishing with the capture of Pseudolus and Hysterium.

  4. Pseudolus, a slave in the household Senex and the property of Hero, is anxious to obtain his freedom. To do so, he will resort to all kinds of trickery, abetted reluctantly by fellow-slave Hysterium. (“I live to grovel,” he says complacently.)

  5. Pseudolus blackmails his slave overseer Hysterium (whose collection of pornographic pottery would shock his prudish owner, Dominia) into masquerading in drag as the “dead” Philia. Things go wrong at every turn. Meanwhile, Hero’s parents, Senex and Dominia, have returned home to add to the chaos.
