Paul Granville Samwell-Smith (born Paul G. Smith, 8 May 1943, in Brentford, West London, England) [1] is an English musician and record producer. He was a founding member and the bassist of the 1960s English rock band the Yardbirds , which launched leading guitarists Eric Clapton , Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page to fame.

Apr 30, 2020 · Given that Samwell-Smith's credits include a co-production with Paul Simon, the movie Postcards From The Edge, and massively successful LPs by Jethro Tull, All About Eve and Cat Stevens, his move into studio work was a good call. An excellent starting point if we want to unpack some of his bass work is the 1964 live album, Five Live Yardbirds.

He was easily their technical and creative equal on the bass guitar at that time. He always used a pick and played a short-scale Epiphone Rivoli with black tape-wound nylon strings.
