  5. Robert Elkington Wood was born June 13, 1879, in Kansas City, Mo. Wood graduated from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point in 1900. In 1905, after serving two years in the Philippines, Wood was ordered to the Panama Canal Zone, where he worked for the next 10 years. In May of 1915, Wood retired from the Army to enter the business sector.
