Michael Donal McCarthy (4 June 1908 – 31 January 1980) was an Irish academic, public servant, university administrator, hurler and Gaelic footballer who played as a right wing-back for the Cork senior teams. Born in Midleton, County Cork, McCarthy first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Rockwell College.

He takes over from Micheál Sheridan, who is moving to a new role in the healthcare sector. Critical was first established in 2009 as Irish Community Rapid Response and in 2019 it successfully launched Ireland’s first and only charity Air Ambulance.
CEO Donal McCarthy was relieved of his duties by the Board of Western Care in November. He had previously launched an investigation into the Individualised Services section of Western Care and placed three senior managers on leave. Following Mr McCarthy’s departure, Western Care said a ‘review of management structures’ was underway.

McCarthy was part of a team that developed Kurt Geiger's mid-range shoe brand Carvela and in 1991 he founded and became chief executive officer of The Shoe Studio Group, a multi-brand concession footwear retailer. In 1996 The Shoe Studio Group was acquired by Nine West Inc. In 2001, McCarthy led a management buyout from Nine West.
