He claimed the imperial throne in response to the murder of Pertinax and the elevation of Didius Julianus, but was defeated by a rival claimant, Septimius Severus, and killed while attempting to flee from Antioch.

Gaius Pescennius Niger was born into an Italian equestrian family in about AD 135. Made a senator by Commodus, he campaigned against the Sarmatians in Dacia in AD 183, alongside Clodius Albinus. He performed well and was rewarded with the consulship. In AD 190 he was made governor of Syria.
The civil war that followed was fought on multiple fronts. Severus first directed his campaign eastward against Niger, whom he defeated in a series of battles culminating in the Battle of Issus in 194 AD. The defeat of Pescennius Niger had significant repercussions for the Eastern provinces.
