    Jan 14, 2016 · The lead ship in the class, USS Spruance (DD 963), was commissioned Sept. 20, 1975. It was the first class of destroyer to incorporate gas turbine engines. One of the largest of the destroyers, she was 563 feet in length and weighed 4,500 tons (fully loaded). The ships were able to reach speeds in excess of 31 knots.
