The film ties up the loose ends from The Search for Spock : Spock reunites with Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and his friends from the now-destroyed U.S.S. Enterprise.
James Horner, composer for The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, declined to return for The Voyage Home. Because of this Nimoy turned to his friend Leonard Rosenman, who had written the music to, among other films, Fantastic Voyage, Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings, and two Planet of the Apes sequels.

The music is composed by Leonard Rosenman who received an Academy Award nomination for his score. Apart from the movie’s full score, the 2CD-set also includes previously unreleased cues, plus several alternates including Rosenman’s unused take on Alexander Courage’s TV theme.
