You must remember that Voldemort is a blood purist (kinda hard to forget) and that, while James Potter was a Pureblood, Lily Potter née Evans was a Muggle-Born (also hard to forget). This may be one of the reasons Voldemort chose the Potters instead of the Longbottoms, who were both Purebloods.
