This crowning achievement in a career full of wide-ranging discoveries and revolutions led Louis Pasteur to found an institution for rabies vaccination, linked with a research center and a teaching center. His appeal for public donations met with resounding success and the Institut Pasteur opened in 1888 as a foundation with charitable status.
He developed the earliest vaccines against fowl cholera, anthrax, and rabies. Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) is revered by his successors in the life sciences as well as by the general public. In fact, his name provided the basis for a household word— pasteurized.
In 1891, the first Foreign Institut Pasteur was founded in Saigon (today Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) launching what was to become a vast international network of Instituts Pasteur. Because he changed the world forever, his homeland and the world have long considered him a benefactor of humanity.
