By March 1942, the Japanese invasion of the Philippines had compelled MacArthur to withdraw his forces on Luzon to Bataan, while his headquarters and his family moved to Corregidor. The doomed defense of Bataan captured the imagination of the American public.
For the next two years, MacArthur pushed to prioritize a return to the Philippines. American strategy called for Admiral Chester Nimitz’s fleet to push into the central Pacific islands from the west, relying on Marines to land and secure key objectives.
A lesser known, but perhaps more monumental message came from MacArthur’s General Headquarters on July 5, 1945, when he declared all of the Philippines had been liberated. The Japanese conquest of the Philippines was one of the worst military disasters in American history.
