Alight, so Peter walked on water 2,000 years ago. But what does that mean for us today? Let’s end by looking at 5 practical lessons we can pull from Matthew 14:22-33.
- Look for Jesus and keep looking to Jesus. Although a storm surrounded Him, Peter looked to Jesus. The only problem was that he stopped looking at Jesus.
- When Jesus commands you, obey Him. Jesus told Peter to “come” to Him on the water. Even though it made no sense, Peter did what Jesus said. This is what obedience looks like–doing what Jesus says.
- Faith is simply taking the next step. Peter took one step to get out of the boat and onto the water. Peter was doing just fine when he was focused on the next step, and got into trouble when he lost sight of his next step.
- Faith unleashes the supernatural. Peter did not experience the supernatural power of God that allowed him to walk on water until he trusted as evidenced by his actions.
- Peter Walks on Water Lesson: Jesus Is Not Blind to or Removed from Our Struggle. In the second sea adventure that nearly sunk the disciples, both literally and spiritually, Jesus had sent his disciples ahead to the other side of the lake while he went up on the mountain alone to pray (Matthew 14:23).
- Miracles Happen When We Are Willing to Step Out in Faith. Unfortunately for the disciples, a journey by boat across the Sea of Galilee that should have taken an hour or two at most, lasted anywhere from six to twelve hours because of the wind and the weather.
- Peter Walks on Water Lesson: Faith Requires Focus. Once Peter stepped out of the boat, he too could walk on water by Christ’s power at work within him.
- Worship Is an Antidote to Anxiety. The story of Jesus (and Peter) walking on water took place mere months after Jesus had calmed the seas while on a boat with his disciples (Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, Luke 8:22-25).
