In 1952 the University of Denver selected him Aviation Man of the Year. Two years later, on January 10, 1954, he died in the crash of a private plane in Louisiana.

On June 20, 1928, this aircraft made its maiden voyage between the two cities, piloted by the founder's brother Paul.
